Updated Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

We are preparing to open registrations for everyone sometime next week. So far it's only been possible to post anonymously, but now anyone can create their own blog in Aatos.

To prepare for this change we have just updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. There aren't any major changes but we have clarified what information we gather from registered users. Your privacy is still our top priority and you don't have to give us any personal information. Even giving us your email address is completely optional.

Adding an email address in your personal settings has some benefits:

  • you can reset a forgotten password, and
  • we will notify you of important security events.

You can still blog anonymously like before, or you can register and claim your own personal space. Some of the main benefits of creating an account are discussed in a previous post.

Have a nice weekend, stay safe and private! :)

Development Notes

Just a short note what we've been working on in the past week. We're getting closer to opening user registrations to everyone, and related to this we've been adding some features that we think are important for everyone:

  • Export site content
  • Change password and reset forgotten password
  • Delete all content and your user account

Now the only thing missing is the user registration itself :)

User registration is totally optional and will always be. It will always be possible to post your thoughts without creating a user account.

Anonymous Registration

Just to be clear, it is possible to create an account completely anonymously without giving any personal information like an email address. All you need is a username and a password.

It is possible, however, to add an email address in your personal user settings. This makes it possible to reset your password if you are unable to log in to Aatos but you still have access to your email. That's the only thing your email address is used for.

Benefits of Creating an Aatos Account

Aatos is first and foremost an anonymous blogging platform. We wanted to make it super easy to just write down your thoughts without going through any kind of registration process or giving up any personal information.

But you can create an account if you want. This has some benefits:

  • It's easier for your readers to find all your posts
  • It's easier to verify that your posts come from the same person/company/organisation/whatever
  • You can save a post as a draft and publish it later
  • You can mark a post as private and the post will not be listed on the Aatos front page
  • You can export all content from your site in a CSV file
  • You can add files like images and add them in your blog posts
  • RSS feed for your blog
  • Static pages, perfect for static pages like About or Contact pages
  • Edit and delete posts

As you can see, that's quite a long list of additional features we think will be very useful for many people.

Enjoy the spring and the weekend, and stay safe and private! :)

Support for Pages

Aatos now supports pages for registered sites. These are great for About pages or something similar that needs to go outside your regular blog flow.

You can see an example in my personal blog. There's nothing fancy here, just simple pages just like the blog posts.

Some Unintended Consequences of Making a Minimalist Privacy Minded Website

I've always been obsessed with making websites fast, but that was not a top priority for Aatos. The goal was to make a privacy first, minimalist, JavaScript and tracking free service for hosting blogs.

It seems that those are the ingredients for a fast browsing experience.

Google PageSpeed Becnhmarking

Aatos test in Google PageSpeed Insights

I just tested a single blog post using Google PageSpeed Insights. Mobile score was 99/100 and desktop 100/100.

Of course, getting scores like that is not quite as easy as removing all JavaScript. Google has some good resources if you want to learn more about making the web faster.

Best Practices for Improving Website Performance

Here's a short list of some of the techniques used in Aatos:

  • Fast server infrastructure
  • Aggressive caching strategy for static assets
  • Minify and compress stylesheets
  • Scale and optimize images and use webp if the client supports it

That's a good baseline checklist for any web project.

Embrace Privacy

Cloudfront TOR Captcha

We should embrace privacy and anonymity, not try to block browsers that don't allow JavaScript and tracking. In these times of fake news and state controlled media it's even more important to be able to browse the web privately, securely and without tracking.

Onions Are Good for You

I like to put onions and garlic in every food I cook. Onions are good on the plate, but they're even better in your browser :)

Aatos is Now Onion Ready

Aatos is now ready for TOR use using an onion service. Our .onion address is

If you open aatos.co using TOR, your browser should notify that our service is also available as an onion service. You can also find the .onion link on the page footer on every page of our site.

Aatos Official Blog

This is the official blog for Aatos, a privacy-first, non-tracking blogging platform.
